Retape is a cross-platform mobile voice messaging app that enables one-to-one voice-message communication.

This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and which third-party services are involved in operating the app.

We aim to collect only the data necessary to provide and improve the service.

2. Information We Collect

Account & Profile Information

When you create and use an account, we collect:

  • Email address
  • Username and profile information

Contacts & Relationships

To enable messaging, we process:

  • Contact relationships, such as connections between users
  • Contact requests and their status

Voice Messages & Content

When you use the app:

  • Audio recordings you create and send are stored
  • Message metadata, such as timestamps and sender/receiver identifiers, is stored
  • Audio may be cached locally on your device for playback and performance

Transcription Data

If transcription is enabled:

  • Audio from voice messages may be sent to a third-party AI provider for speech-to-text processing
  • Generated transcript text and related metadata, such as language, processing status, and errors, may be stored
  • Future features may generate additional structured outputs, such as notes or tasks

Device & Technical Data

We collect limited technical data such as:

  • Device type and OS version
  • App usage events, such as recording and playback
  • Crash logs and performance diagnostics

Notification Data

To deliver notifications, push tokens and installation-related identifiers are stored.

3. How We Use Information

We use collected data to:

  • Provide core messaging functionality
  • Store and deliver voice messages
  • Enable optional transcription features
  • Send notifications
  • Improve performance, reliability, and user experience

We do not sell personal data.

4. Third-Party Services & Processing

We use the following third-party services to operate Retape:

  • Supabase: used for authentication, database storage (PostgreSQL), and media storage.
  • Expo: used for app infrastructure, audio handling, and notification services.
  • OpenAI: used for optional speech-to-text transcription of voice messages. When enabled, audio data is sent to OpenAI for processing.
  • Apple Inc. and Google LLC: used for platform services such as push notification delivery and app distribution.

These providers process data only as necessary to deliver their respective services.

5. Data Storage

  • Account data, message metadata, and relationships are stored in a secure cloud database
  • Audio files are stored in cloud object storage
  • Some data is cached locally on your device for performance
  • Access to stored data is controlled via authentication and access rules

6. Data Sharing

We share data only:

  • With service providers listed above
  • When required by law or legal process

We do not share data for advertising purposes.

7. Data Retention

  • Account data is retained while your account is active
  • Voice messages and transcripts are retained until deleted by the user or removed by system policies
  • Technical logs may be retained for diagnostics and service improvement

8. Your Rights

You may:

  • Request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Stop using the app at any time

9. Children's Privacy

Retape is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date.
